Day 2Call SheetTake 1

Reading a Call Sheet

Your call time is one line. The rest of the sheet answers the questions you were about to ask.

About 10 minutes, plus an optional part for ADs and producers. Day 2 of Last Light, a non-union indie feature in the US.

Start

Part 1: Find it

Eight questions people really ask on set. Tap the part of the call sheet that answers each one. If you miss, you'll learn what you tapped instead.

Eight questions people really ask on set, each with the part of the call sheet that answers it. The sheet below is shown with its sections numbered; the key follows it.

  1. "When do I need to be here?" Crew calls: grip and electric, 5:30 a.m. Not crew call.
  2. "When does the camera roll for the first time?" Shooting call, 7:30 a.m.
  3. "Where do I park?" Locations: crew parking.
  4. "Someone's hurt. Where's the nearest hospital?" Nearest hospital.
  5. "Which scenes am I in today?" Scenes: every row with cast 1 (12, 13, 31).
  6. "Whose last day on the film is it? We'll want applause for the picture wrap." Cast: Theo Grant, status WF.
  7. "Is anything moving today?" Scenes: the company move after lunch (also in the notes).
  8. "Do I need rain gear tomorrow, and when's call?" Advance schedule: Day 3, crew call 4:00 p.m., showers likely.

The annotated call sheet

Every section, what it's for, and the question it answers. Download it as a PDF.

  1. Production. The film, the day of the shoot (Day 2 of 18), and who's in charge. Save the production office number.
  2. Times. Crew call is when most people start. Shooting call is when the first shot should roll. Lunch is six hours after crew call. Sunrise and sunset limit every exterior.
  3. Weather. Dress for it, and look for a rain plan in the notes.
  4. Locations. Each set, basecamp and crew parking. Park where it says, not at set.
  5. Nearest hospital. Know it before you need it.
  6. Scenes. What's shooting, in order: scene number, set, D (day) or N (night), page count, and cast numbers. A company move means the whole unit relocates.
  7. Cast. Each actor's number, character, status and times. Find an actor's scenes by their number.
  8. Background. How many extras, their call, where they're held and what to wear.
  9. Notes. What each department needs today, the rain plan and the radio channels.
  10. Crew calls. Your department's call. It may be earlier than crew call.
  11. Advance schedule. Tomorrow's scenes, call and weather, so you can plan tonight.

Codes

Cast status, from the AD's Day Out of Days: SW start work (first day) · W work · WF work finish (last day) · SWF start, work and finish the same day · H hold (paid, not working today).

Pages in eighths: a script page is eight eighths. 1 3/8 is one page and three eighths (eleven eighths). No scene counts as less than 1/8.

  1. Crew call is 4:00 a.m. Day 2 wrapped at 7:00 p.m., so that's nine hours of turnaround, and the minimum is ten. Everything else on the sheet, and yesterday's advance schedule, says 4:00 p.m.
  2. Scene 41 is a day exterior after sunset. Shooting starts at 5:30 p.m. and the sun sets at 6:50, so scene 41 can't be D. It's a night scene, or it belongs on another day.
  3. Scene 42 needs cast 4, but cast 4 isn't on the cast list. Lena Brooks would never get a call time.
  4. Set 2 has no nearest hospital. It's a new location on a dark road at night. Every set needs one.
